That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is one of the odder anime series out there. On the surface, this anime adaptation of the light novels of the same name by Fuse looks like your stereotypical isekai anime about an overpowered main character and with questionable morality regarding female characters. However, when you dig deeper, you quickly find that this isekai anime is far from the stereotypical in many good ways. This includes having a main character who is somewhere in between genderfluid and nonbinary (as well as being surprisingly wholesome), and having strong and complex female main characters. The latter seems like a low bar, but that’s the state of most isekai anime these days. It doesn’t take much to clear that bar. Thus, the fact that we have an isekai anime clearing that low bar is refreshing.

It’s why That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is one of the most popular isekai anime out there. So popular, in fact, that the ongoing anime series is currently at 72 episodes and counting. So popular that it even received an anime film spinoff in 2022. That would be That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie – Scarlet Bond. And now, we’re getting another one.

See?

Honestly, this is a pretty clear sign That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is very much a popular anime series. Most isekai anime series are popular, but at least this one is popular for the right reasons. As a fan of the anime myself, I can confirm that it is not your stereotypical isekai anime in all the right ways. If you’re tired of an overpowered male main character in a fantasy world obtaining multiple female lovers, then this is a refreshing break from that. Alas, we can’t do anything about the stereotypical title length. That itself is a parody, but it also plays the trope straight.
