When you feel there’s no way home, it’s time to start things fresh. At least, that’s what it feels like Marvel Studios is doing, after watching that Spider-Man: Brand New Day teaser. It’s been almost a week since our first look at Tom Holland’s webslinging return has been released; and naturally people have questions.
Since I am indeed “people,” I fall into that same bucket – and there’s two inquiries I need to be answered after some light prodding by a friend. So if you’re still stringing red yarn on your corkboard, what I’m about to pose may calm your jangle nerves – or fire them into overdrive. Take a breath, drink some water, and let’s play Question and Theoretical Answer with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest.

Question: What Does MJ’s New Squeeze Paul Mean For The MCU?
I have fellow journalist and friend Sabeen Faheem, aka “The Hijabi Bounder,” to thank for this MCU rabbit hole. Her reaction to the Brand New Day footage speculates that Paul (Eman Esfandi) is a riff on a character of the same name in the Marvel Comics. Should that speculation hold up, we could hear wedding bells for this pair – or at least see a dramatic proposal in the offing.
Considering Tom Holland and Zendaya are a real-life pair, and Spider-Man stories tend to keep these Midtown Science grads together, introducing this character is a curious move. So what sort of play could Spider-Man: Brand New Day be pushing for? Well, if you’ll indulge in my first theory, I think the road ahead lies all in the name of the fourth Sony/Marvel co-production.

Answer: Paul May Be Sacrificed In Order To Reunite Peter, MJ, And Ned
In Marvel Comics’ canon Spider-Man: One More Day undoes Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage, for the sake of sparing Aunt May. A controversial plotline that still has Marvel fans wrinkling their noses in disapproval, the fallout in Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to stand out. So what if Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios’ story architects are trying to rehab that story’s image?
Now I don’t think we’re going to see Marisa Tomei coming back from the dead; especially when that big undo button was kind of pressed when Peter Parker wiped himself from people’s memories in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However the fast and loose adaptations the MCU has engaged in could see Paul and MJ’s marriage being the union to take the bullet.
Not only would that be a heroic note for Paul to go out on, it’d put our New York love birds back in the same nest. Let’s face it, Tom Holland and Zendaya’s real-life romance won’t let fans accept anything short of ultimate romantic victory. Despite those feelings, Sadie Sink’s secretive Spider-Man role could be a further key to unlocking that endgame – as well as another surprise party that’s shown up in the teaser referenced above.

Question: What Are Keith David’s Dulcet Tones Doing In This Picture?
I don’t care what other theories are saying: that is Keith David’s voice in the teaser for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Argue with the wall on this one, kids; because years of watching The Thing, Gargoyles, The Princess and the Frog, I know that voice anywhere. Even the man himself seems to be keen to let us think that he’s present, as you’ll see in this recent tweet:
So if Keith David is here, what could he possibly be doing in Brand New Day? Why would you cast a man with that sort of voice to deliver voice-over about the lifecycle of spiders? For all we know it could be some cheeky acknowledgement of Mr. David’s vocal talents – as he could be the Sir David Attenborough of Earth-199999, and merely voices exposition friendly nature docs. Or, in this multiverse of madness, he could be the new face of an old foe.

Answer: Mr. David Could Be Mephisto; Triggering That A Brand New Day (Eventually)
Yes, the world’s current image of Mephisto comes from the Ironheart finale – as played by Sacha Baron Cohen. I would never take that away from the man, as he was technically the first appearance of this tempting demon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also, you have to respect the stones on that casting – so any sort of alteration would need both a really good reason, and a stellar successor on deck.
However, Mephisto is a Faustian demon, and those sort of players can take on any form they please. A new Keith David variant of that character would explain the more upbeat tone of his dialogue, as he could be framing his offer as a perk. It would also be a convenient card to stack in the deck for Avengers: Secret Wars‘ big post-Multiverse Saga reset.
If Marvel Studios is setting up the MCU for a massive reboot in the wake of Avengers: Secret Wars ending The Multiverse Saga, this move makes sense. Peter and MJ\s hypothetical reunion being a key event that binds the Multiverse together again – for a time – makes sense. So rather than asking Paul to sacrifice his would-be happy ending for a singular life, he could be doing it for the entire cosmos.
Scaling back down to the here and now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could play all sorts of cards that invalidate this theory. And yes, I could be absolutely wrong in presuming that Keith David’s voice is in the trailer; or that he’ll be in the final film. The clock is ticking until July 31st, when that Brand New Day arrives. So be sure to keep it tuned to THS’ Spider-Man archives, for all of the friendly neighborhood updates for pop culture’s latest and greatest.
