The trailer for For All Mankind’s spinoff Star City includes a simple, but potent statement that sums up the Soviet-based companion series: “there are two sides to every history.” Fans of Apple TV mothership program’s Season 5 return tomorrow must feel like they’ve opened a Christmas present, with this “expansion” set to take flight on finale day.

As the Rhys Ifans-starring alternate history ensemble sees the moon rising on its tale, For All Mankind’s fate has just taken a bittersweet turn. However, the news we’re here to deliver makes a lot of sense, depending on who you ask.

For now, let’s cool our jets and fire up Apple TV’s teaser for Star City

Obviously, we’re going to relive the events that have driven For All Mankind’s space race to the Moon and beyond. The major difference is that Star City will now do so through the Soviet lens. That means we’ll finally learn the history behind moments like the USSR’s first lunar landing, as well as the decision process behind sending cosmonaut Anastasia Belikova into the history books.

It couldn’t have happened at a better time, honestly. Going a little further in thought, it feels like Star City is planned to take the reins For All Mankind first grabbed in its 2019 debut. You know, it’s funny you should mention that…

For All Mankind Has Been Renewed For Its Sixth, And Final, Season – As Planned

Sorry astronauts, the space jig is up. Announced practically simultaneously with Star City’s new footage was the fact that its predecessor series’ sixth season will be its last. While that may seem a bit random, it appears that this was truly all part of the plan. Series co-creator Matt Wolpert explains that case pretty clearly, through this quote from his recent Variety interview:

I think from the beginning, the thing that we were focused on, and we didn’t know quite how many seasons it would take to get there, was that we wanted to reach the present day. We wanted to tell the arc of the story from the initial divergence of 1969, and then reach the present moment, and see just how different the world we’re in now could have been had we kept pushing for progress and kept pushing forward as a species.

So what does this mean for Star City? Rather than just operating as a simple retelling of For All Mankind’s history, we’ll get to see the progress that Soviet Russia made to kick start humanity’s voyage to the stars. The possibilities are endless, as the Iron Curtain was pretty good at keeping the nation’s secrets behind closed doors – both in our own history, and that of this alternate reality.

Don’t worry too hard though, fellow space travelers. For All Mankind Season 5 starts its journey with its premiere episode, debuting on Apple TV on March 27th. Star City Season 1 launches right behind it on May 29th, the same day of the Season 5 finale. That means a lot of fun in this skewed timeline lies ahead – so keep your browser tuned to THS’ TV News Archives, to keep up with all of the latest and greatest in pop culture!
