Animorphs is coming back and Ryan Coogler is producing the new series. Variety reports that the beloved young adult novel will be adapted into a new TV show on Disney plus. Bayan Wolcott will write and executive produce the series. Joining Coogler from the Proximity Media side are Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. This marks the latest Legacy franchise to get a bump from the Black Panther director after his upcoming X-Files series.

Simone Harris from Proximity Media as head of TV and director of development Dezi Gallegos will oversee the project.  Scholastic is also involved with the project. Caitlin Friedman and Iole Lucchese serve as executive producers on the books side. Animorphs has remained a popular draw for Scholastic as the appeal of the series extends past the Millennials that read these books as children. Now, another generation will have their taste of the complicated moral conflicts and sci-fi adventures.

Here’s the logline that Variety obtained for the new Animorphs series: “follows a group of teenagers who uncover a hidden threat lurking beneath their everyday lives, all while juggling relationships, curfews, and the chaos of High School.”

The kids in question include a group of teenagers who gain the ability to morph into animals in a massive battle against a hostile alien race. Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias learn about the animal kingdom and the Andalites across 54 books. Original author KA Applegate is a millennial favorite as she wrote those novels with her husband Michael Grant. These kids wander into a decades long struggle between the Andalites and the Yeerks. Unfortunately, Earth is caught in the cross hairs. Our protagonists are navigating some impossible situations.
