BLACK TORCH is a most interesting Shonen Jump manga. Not least of which because it’s so short-lived for a SJ manga series. This dark science fantasy manga by Tsuyoshi Takaki began its run in December 2016, and only ran for a mere five volumes before it was ultimately cancelled in July 2018. Regardless of that short run length though, this particular manga did ultimately receive an international release, including in the U.S.. It even received praise from critics for its character dynamics and the author’s use of story devices. Ultimately though, it was a manga that Shonen Jump cut down just when it was getting good. Which is why this story for today is so interesting.
Crunchyroll is proud to announce that the anime adaptation of BLACK TORCH will soon make its streaming debut there in July 2026. As part of this announcement, Crunchyroll has a brand new official trailer for this upcoming anime. You can watch that trailer either on YouTube, or just look below for that and the new key visual:
BLACK TORCH Will Receive Anime Adaptation in July 2026 Despite Short Shonen Jump Run

Honestly, BLACK TORCH getting an anime adaptation is not just exciting in of itself. It also raises hope that other Shonen Jump manga that were cut down in their prime might get an anime adaptation as well. Does anyone remember those short manga series like Ginka & Glüna, Dear Anemone, Kaedegami, and i tell c? All of them were manga series that were suddenly cancelled without warning after very short runs, regardless of how popular they were at the time. Often seemingly for things such as having a strong female protagonist(s) or introducing LGBTQ+ characters or plot elements, or even for no apparent reason at all. Mayhaps these short manga series might also receive anime adaptations now that BLACK TORCH is setting a precedent? Well, only time will tell here.
