For once, Journal with Witch is giving us depression not from death, but from love and its complexities in Ep. 6 “Overlap”. All stemming from the worry and woe that romantic love can give people. Fortunately, as Makio finds out, there are also good things coming from love too.

Journal with Witch Ep. 6 “Overlap”: Details in Brief

A bit Makio-centric, this episode is.

Journal with Witch Ep. 6 “Overlap” is the sixth episode (you can read my reviews of Ep. 1Ep. 2Ep. 3Ep. 4, and Ep. 5 here) of this slice of life comedy-drama anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Tomoko Yamashita.

Shuka (Durarara!!x2 Shō91 DaysNatsume’s Book of Friends: Fifth Season) is the animation studio behind this anime. Miyuki Oshiro is the director of this anime, with Kōhei Kiyasu as the writer, and Kensuke Ushio as the composer for the music.

Speaking of the music: the opening theme song for Journal with Witch is “Sonare” (ソナーレ) by Tomoo. Meanwhile, “Kotozute” (言伝; lit. ’Hearsay’) by Bialystocks is the ending theme song.

Synopsis

Just from this scene alone, you can tell that this anime is the definition of a hidden gem.

Alas, Journal with Witch is still an ongoing anime series. In fact, Ep. 6 “Overlap” only just made its debut on February 8, 2026 exclusively on Crunchyroll. Thus, for those of you wishing to avoid spoilers, here’s the synopsis for this week’s episode from Crunchyroll below:

“As Asa enters summer break, Makio finds herself growing closer with Kasamachi-kun.”

They ride to Valhalla, shiny and chrome!

As you can tell by the title of this review, Ep. 6 “Overlap” is all about love woes, and that’s why the story is amazingly good. Much of those woes revolve around the love life of Makio (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro (JP)), and her maybe-yes, maybe-no relationship with Shingo Kasamachi (voiced by Junichi Suwabe (JP)). That relationship is depicted to be highly complex, fraught with guilt from Makio over their previous break-up in the past, but also made even more complex by her continuing attraction to Shingo Kasamachi. The nuance here is why this romance story is both highly realistic and absolutely fascinating to watch.

Not only that, but then there’s the side romance plot involving Asa’s (voiced by Fuko Mori (JP)) best friend Emiri (voiced by Sumire Morohoshi (JP)). Specifically, it’s about Emiri’s lack of interest in dating men. It’s not hard to guess that Emiri is discovering that she’s either asexual or lesbian. The LGBTQ+ side plot here only adds to the overall themes of romance in this episode, especially since Makio does offer some genuine advice (plus a movie) to Emiri to help her discover herself. Which in turn also helps Makio discover more about herself in turn. It creates a nice back and forth between the two plotlines that build each other up.

Also, kudos to this episode for giving a shout-out to one of the greatest movies of all time: Mad Max: Fury Road. No, I’m not kidding. Ep. 6 “Overlap” actually directly mentions the movie by name when Makio recommends it to Asa. It’s a small thing, but as a fan of that movie, I can deeply appreciate.

A perfect complement to old flames reigniting.

Alas, as amazing as that story is, Ep. 6 “Overlap”, the animation quality is still the one thing holding it back. Again, though, Shuka’s animation team has done an amazing job with the animation budget they have. Heck, the food they show off at that Chinese restaurant looks surprisingly delicious despite the lack of detail, with the animators focusing on artistic depiction over things like shading and ha igh level of detail. Unfortunately, it still shows off a relatively low budget for this anime’s animation, far below that of something like the average copy-paste isekai anime. This is still a niche anime in terms of animation quality, but it is propped up by a very good story.

And of course, it’s still an action-free story. This is a slice of life comedy-drama, not a shonen-style action-packed adventure. If you want that, then you’re going to have to look elsewhere.
