The Academy Awards are leaving the Dolby Theater in 2029 and heading to L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles with a new agreement with AEG that runs through 2039. This move means that everything about the ceremony will be bigger. The complex for L.A. Live is much larger than what the Dolby Theater can provide, including increased capacity, red carpet, show, press operations, and post-show events.
This also coincides with the ceremony’s broadcast moving from ABC to YouTube in 2029, which is the ceremony trying to get more reach globally and hit a different, younger demographic.
The ceremony will now take place in the Peacock Theater, which is expected to be renamed (after plenty of different names in the past) as part of a new naming rights deal.
The show has been at the Dolby Theater since 2002, which sits in the middle of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, near the TCL Chinese Theater and the El Capitan Theater. The new complex is part of a massive effort by the city of Los Angeles to reinvigorate and update the Downtown area. There are plans for a new hotel in the same complex as L.A. Live, residences, and additional entertainment space.
Before the Dolby Theater the ceremony was held Downtown at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and at the Shrine Auditorium. The new staging and area makes for less of a logistical issue than the Dolby Theater and Hollywood Boulevard. It appears that the actual stage and show won’t look that much different at home on the broadcast.
“L.A. Live was built to host the moments that define culture and there is no greater global stage than the Oscars,” said Todd Goldstein, AEG’s chief revenue officer. “Together, we will create an environment that celebrates creativity, honors excellence and delivers an unforgettable experience for movie fans everywhere.”
“For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make L.A. Live the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema,” Academy Chief Executive Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a statement.
