Happy New Year, dear readers and friends! 2026 has finally landed, and we’re already primed to see the debut of some impressive looking titles in the world of cinema. A new year means 12 new months of delight, which means it’s time for the THS Cinema Forecast for January 2026!
The first frame of the calendar ahead is one that’s very action-packed, with a lot of frights ready to chill you to the bone. Not to mention, the long foretold arrival of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is about to land; which is actually a good place for us to start.
THS’ Heater Of January 2026
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – January 16th
If you’re keeping up with the hype surrounding the second chapter of the now confirmed 28 Years Later trilogy, you knew this was coming. Director Nia DaCosta’s middle installment is already getting some fantastic buzz thanks to some early “leaked screenings,” as well as The Bone Temple’s amazing trailers. Some are already hyping the ending up to be quite a doozy, so it’s a good thing we don’t have to wait much longer to observe how Cillian Murphy comes back to the fold.
THS’ Sleeper Of January 2026

Primate – January 9th
I didn’t think that Paramount’s Primate seemed like a potential sleeper hit. And yet when its Rotten Tomatoes score weighed in at an impressive 92% (based on 25 reviews at the time of writing), that expectation changed. Even my latest viewings of the trailer for writer/director Johannes Roberts’ upcoming horror show have left me warming to the film’s potential. Perhaps the studio who brought us Crawl is ready to double down in the realm of the creature feature.
THS’ Streaming Second Chance Of January 2026

Tron: Ares – January 7th
We won’t go too deep into why Tron: Ares’ Disney+ premiere is a big deal. For now, I’m just going to say that this is a perfect inaugural entry to the “Streaming Second Chance” point included in future Cinema Forecast installments. That, and if Tron 4 doesn’t happen, don’t come crying to me. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the rest of this month’s promising potential.
January 2nd

We Bury The Dead
OK, so we’re a bit behind on pitching Daisy Ridley’s zombie drama We Bury The Dead. Obvious calendar disadvantages aside, this picture could be one of the most sobering undead narratives in quite a while. Horror surprises seem to do best in these early months, and this could set the bar other offerings need to clear to succeed.
January 9th

Greenland 2: Migration
“What happens after space debris decimates the planet?” is a question most disaster pictures leave to the imagination. Thankfully, Greenland 2: Migration is a rare example of a potential franchise forming when the dust clears. Stars Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin return, along with director/frequent Butler collaborator Ric Roman Waugh, to pick up the story five years after the 2020 surprise hit.
January 16th

The Rip
While Ben Affleck and Matt Damon previously reunited for the Nike biopic Air, we didn’t see the iconic duo interact all that much on screen. That’s about to change – as seen in the trailer for Netflix’s The Rip. Showing Affleck and Damon’s Miami cops jumping into an adrenaline field nightmare involving a cache of drug money, the Good Will Hunting boys can’t trust anyone – even each other. Sounds a lot more complicated than, “Applesauce, bitch.”

Night Patrol
Keeping the action in law enforcement, Night Patrol’s trailer makes the Shudder theatrical debut look like End of Watch but with a very undead difference. With a titular LAPD unit that’s made up of vampires, a stylish street fight between human and bloodsucker is brewing. Also, Dermot Mulroney continuing his villain streak is a delight to see on screen.
January 23rd

Mercy
If you’re looking to enjoy 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in 4DX, you’re going to need to act quickly as the most recent trailer for Chris Pratt’s sci-fi thriller Mercy is also partaking in that format. Heading to IMAX and 3D screens as well, the tensely timed thriller sees Pratt’s protagonist trying to prove his guilt against an A.I. judge (Rebecca Ferguson) from the very program he helped develop.

Return To Silent Hill
This April marks the 20th anniversary of Silent Hill’s first cinematic adaptation; making Return to Silent Hill’s latest trailer an invitation to a more than welcomed homecoming. Landing towards the end of THS’ Cinema Forecast for January 2026, the return of director Christophe Gans (in a riff on fan favorite installment Silent HIll 2) only amps up the thrills. Let’s just hope this direct adaptation of one of Konami’s classics fares better than Silent Hill: Revelation – a movie that sets off a totally different set of sirens, when mentioned.

The Wrecking Crew*
No, this isn’t a dramatized remake of the 2008 music documentary of the same name. Rather, The Wrecking Crew 2026 involves a pair of half-brothers who look to uncover the truth behind a family tragedy. Oh, did I mention this Prime Video exclusive stars Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista as said relatives in this action flick? Probably should have lead with that.
*Streaming On Prime Video, January 28th

Send Help
Four years after he returned to directing with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Sam Raimi is looking to Send Help. However, there’s definitely a twist to this survival based thriller that strands Rachel McAdams and boss from hell Dylan O’Brien on a deserted island. With an injury taking the latter out, the former steps up to keep the party alive – albeit with some measure payback.

Iron Lung
YouTuber Mark “Markiplier” Fischbach has been developing the film version of Iron Lung as a labor of love for almost three years. Those efforts are ever closer to debuting, and based on the trailer to the picture he wrote, directed, and stars in – the time was well spent on this potential THS Cinema Forecast hit. Anyone tempted to shout, “Don’t cry, Markimoo,” should abstain; as this man is now a serious auteur!

The Moment
What’s one more anxiety-fueled adventure among friends? Helping to close out January 2026 is the Charli XCX starring vehicle The Moment. Hatching the picture’s central idea herself, co-writer/director Aidan Zamiri has helped realize this dissection of celebrity in the era of “Brat.” Yes, this is an A24 movie; but no The Safdies didn’t have a hand in crafting it – even if it looks like a pop-flavored spin on their sort of weaponized panic attacks.
With that, January 2026’s THS Cinema Forecast is officially on the books. So be sure to check your schedule, and keep in mind that dates are always subject to change.
