Laurence Fishburne is no stranger to terror with roles in Event Horizon and Hannibal, but now he’s taking on the devil himself in the upcoming reboot of The Exorcist. Mike Flanagan is on board to write and direct the film from Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. He joins the previously announced case of Scarlett Johansson, Jacobi Jupe, Diane Lane, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. His role is under wraps for now, but the film will not be a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer and also won’t be a remake of the original film. The project should start production soon and is headed for a March 2027 release date in theaters.

The rumors are that Ejiofor is playing an ex-con turned priest, with Johansson playing Jupe’s mother in the film.

The original film The Exorcist, came from William Friedkin and was based on the novel by William Peter Blatty. It told the story of a demonic possession of a young girl and the priests that try to save her. It was one of the first horror movies to be nominated for 10+ Oscars. The series gave us plenty of sequels and prequels over the years.

The new film has a theatrical release date of March 12, 2027. It’s being produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Flanagan with his company Red Room Pictures.

David Robinson produces for Morgan Creek Entertainment. Jason Blum and Ryan Turek serve as producer and executive producer, respectively, for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Alexandra Magistro will also executive produce for Red Room Pictures.
