28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was a revelation. The film brought in the stylings of the previous films but added Nia DaCosta’s directorial style. She recently sat down with our friend Brandon Davis on an episode of his podcast The Brandon Davis Show for his Director Debrief segment. She talked all things The Bone Temple including the ending of the film. So for those of you who haven’t seen the film, there might be spoilers ahead. So go watch the movie and then you can see what she had to say about the ending of the film.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Spoilers Ahead

A made up Ralph Fiennes stands in front of a tower of skulls in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

Here’s what Nia had to say about the film on the podcast.

“Honestly, I think from a really practical, un-sexy point of view, he’s coming for one scene and the third movie, no one knows what it is going to be yet. So he’s just like, all right, here I am, you know?

I was thinking a lot about how not to make it feel franchise-y, because, you know, when someone returns, it’s like a ‘Da da da da!’ And I was like, no, that’s not the spirit of the franchise or of the world that we’re in and it’s also not the spirit of the character and so I love that the choice that Alex made was like, ‘Oh, we’re going to meet Jim again and he’s teaching his daughter about like the end of fascism or about history.

“This is a man who cares deeply about the legacy of humanity but also about hope in the future and the fact that it ends with him saying, ‘Of course we’re going to help them.’ Like, ‘That’s just what we do. That’s who we are.’ That just informed the style of the shooting. It had to feel really different from the rest of the movie. Similar to the last scene and 28 Days Later where you’re like, ‘Oh, now we’re on film and it feels like this peaceful and ducally.’ I wanted something similar.”

Details About 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

Jack O'Connell and Ralph Fiennes sit together in the sun in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple brings in Nia DaCosta as director and keeps Alex Garland as the screenwriter. If you were intrigued by the final 5 minutes of the previous film with the Jimmys and Spike, you’ll be even more intrigued by them in this film. That’s part of the story on display here, that feels both smaller in scale than the last film, and simultaneously for Dr. Kelson, gigantic.

The film stars Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry. Here’s what we had to say about the film in our 92% review.

The ending of the movie is also likely to excite fans of the series and sets us up for one last entry to cap off this trilogy. I was not a fan of 28 Years Later, but this film fills in the gaps of that movie, and I can safely say that this might make that last film better in my eyes. The story of Spike, Dr. Kelson, Samson, and the Jimmys is enthralling and engaging, keeping you wrapped up all the way to the end.
