Folks, I need to throw down a particularly loaded phrase, so as to take the shock out of this report: “Disney live action.” Now that we’ve got that out of the way, allow me to lift your spirits again with news of a new Cinderella-adjacent project. That may sound crazy, but with both a killer concept in the hopper, and the perfect team to make it happen, I think this new flick fits like a glass slipper.
Deadline has broken the news that Stepsisters is in development, with director Akiva Schaffer, and writers Dan Gregor & Doug Mand on the stick. For you Disney fans playing at home, that’s the team that worked their magic on 2022’s Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers movie. Though everyone else still has a reason to laugh, as the aforementioned talent all served on the recent legacy-quel to The Naked Gun as well.
Stepsisters’ Synopsis Is Vague, But Carries Much Promise
With a team like Stepsisters’ director and writers, we should obviously keep a very tongue-in-cheek style of comedy in mind. Naturally secrecy is still key with a project this big, but as you’ll read below, the synopsis of what to expect is a pretty golden opportunity for farcical satire:
…a live action film that focuses on the evil stepsisters who abused Cinderella and got theirs when her foot fit the slipper.
If that doesn’t sound like a Cinderella sequel to me, then I don’t know what does. Though again, I’m not trying to open any old wounds with folks who are trying to cast out the memory of those two direct-to-video follow-ups that released in 2002 and 2007.
Rather, I’m just jazzed to see an irreverent concept bringing a Disney classic to life again; as opposed to yet another reboot. (You and I both know the Lily James-starring film from 2015 is truly the goods.)
As of this moment Stepsisters doesn’t have an intended release date; and we don’t know if this will go theatrical – or be another Disney+ exclusive.
