Tubi’s Kissing Is the Easy Part is tapping into a genre many fans feel has been missing from the big screen: the heartfelt, funny, and deeply relatable coming-of-age romance. At the film’s recent red carpet premiere, the cast reflected on why teen rom-coms still matter, and why audiences of all ages are ready to fall in love with them again.

“There’s something universal about these movies,” star Paris Berelc shared. “Whether you’re a teenager literally going through it or an adult reminiscing and feeling that nostalgia, they just make you feel good.” In an entertainment landscape often dominated by darker themes, Kissing Is the Easy Part leans fully into love, growth, and emotional connection. “I’m a sucker for love stories and rom-coms,” Ginny and Georgia’s Jennifer Robertson added. “These movies are here to stay.”

What sets Kissing Is the Easy Part apart is its focus on family, particularly the nuanced relationship between a mother and her teenage son. Unlike many teen romantic comedies where parents fade into the background, this story embraces the reality that most teens still live at home, and that those dynamics matter. Jennifer Robertson, is portraying the film’s mother figure, who fans may recognize from projects like Ginny & Georgia, spoke about building a character who is involved but not overbearing. “I love seeing a mother and son connected in a way that’s positive,” she said. “Life is hard, and love is beautiful, so let’s lean toward the love.” She emphasized how important it was to portray a parent teens can actually talk to, something she mirrors in her own life with her nearly 16-year-old daughter.

Friendship plays just as vital a role. From “blunt best friends” who keep you grounded to friends who teach you how to stay present in the moment, Kissing Is the Easy Part highlights how relationships (romantic and platonic) shape who we become. Several cast members reflected on their own high school experiences, from Ottawa arts schools to Scarborough’s vibrant music culture, sharing how their communities influenced their taste in Afro beats, dancehall, fashion, and self-expression.

The film also marks a transitional moment for its young leading man, who acknowledged stepping into adulthood both onscreen and off. “It’s definitely different stepping into the grown space,” Asher Angel said. “But I’m excited for this new chapter.”

Ultimately, Kissing Is the Easy Part is about more than teenage crushes. It’s about choosing love, positivity, and connection in a complicated world. As one cast member put it, “If we loved more, we could be our best selves in every moment.”
