Mother Mary just got a haunting new trailer from A24. Director David Lowry is back with a psychosexual pop thriller Destined for social media. Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, Hunter Schaefer, and FKA Twigs all star in Mother Mary. As you can see from that engrossing trailer up above, this entire film screams A24 production. It’s what you would expect from the person who made The Green Knight.
At its core Mother Mary is the story of a pop star trying to rekindle a friendship with someone from her deep past. And Hathaway plays Mother Mary and the costume designer who helped make her is played by Michaela Coel. FKA Twigs has original songs in this movie, as does Charlie XCX. There’s even a bit of real-world mirroring with Jack Antonoff writing some of the songs.
A24’s Mother Mary gets a wild trailer
Getting into the mindset for Mother Mary is no easy feat. Hathaway was the cover story for Vogue back in August. She hyped how far the A24 movie pushed her. Lowery was clearly looking for something raw in this story of two women. The lead actress also had to learn how to sing in some very unconditional ways.
“I had to submit to being a beginner.” Hathaway told the publication. “The humility of that—showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner. Getting to that mindset—I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”
