This weekend’s box office delivered a major surge thanks to one breakout hit that far exceeded expectations. After several weeks of steady but unspectacular results, a true event-level release arrived and gave theaters a much needed boost.

Project Hail Mary Soars Past Projections

Project Hail Mary launched with a massive $80.6 million opening weekend.

That debut blew past expectations. Tracking had the film projected between $50 million and $65 million, with a $60 million estimate from myself. Instead, it surged well beyond that range and delivered one of the strongest openings in recent memory.

The combination of strong awareness, broad appeal, and must-see scale clearly resonated with audiences. This was not just a win, it was a statement that the right film can still drive large crowds into theaters.

Hoppers Remains a Strong Holdover

Hoppers earned $18.0 million in its third weekend.

Even with a major blockbuster taking over premium screens, the family hit continues to perform well. Its steady presence highlights the strength of the family audience, which tends to show up consistently regardless of new competition.

Dhurandhar The Revenge Debuts Solidly

Dhurandhar The Revenge opened with $9.6 million.

The film delivered a respectable debut, carving out space in a weekend dominated by a single breakout hit. While it did not challenge the top two, it demonstrated enough audience interest to secure a comfortable spot in the top five.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come Lands Near Expectations

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come debuted with $9.1 million.

Tracking suggested an opening between $8.5 million and $13.5 million, with a prediction of $9.5 million. The final result landed almost exactly where I expected. The sequel benefited from an established fanbase, but without a major breakout push, it settled into a modest and predictable debut range.

Reminders of Him Holds Well

Reminders of Him added $8.0 million in its second weekend.

After surprising with a strong opening last weekend, the film posted a solid hold. Its performance continues to reflect the strength of its built in audience, even as larger releases begin to dominate the conversation.

Next Weekend’s Predictions

Next weekend also sees the release of They Will Kill You, which is currently tracking between $6 million and $10 million. That range already points to a modest debut, but there are clear factors working against it. Most notably, it faces direct competition from Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, which is targeting a very similar audience.

With that overlap and limited differentiation, it may struggle to break out in a meaningful way. A debut around $6 million feels like the ceiling, if not slightly optimistic, depending on how much attention it can actually pull in.

As always, we’ll find out next week.
