I’m a sucker for a good detective story, especially with a sharp-dressed protagonist who winds their way through a noir-style mystery. Apple TV+’s Sugar fits that bill, following Colin Farrell snooping through modern day L.A. in the name of cracking the case. Of course those in the know will tell you there’s more to it than that, which makes the contents of its second season announcement a bit of a refreshing surprise.

Sugar Season 2’s First Details Keep Mum About The Series’ Wild Nature

Those of you interested in getting into this special brand of trouble fresh can read THS’ Sugar Season 1 review, and stream all eight episodes on Apple TV. You don’t have to rush to do that just yet, as Season 2’s run will start on June 19th; with another eight episodes lined up.

As for what exactly is going on, here’s the official synopsis of John Sugar’s next mystery:

Season 2 ushers in the return of Los Angeles’s iconic private detective and film connoisseur John Sugar. Emmy nominee Colin Farrell returns for a new case, tracking the troubled older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer as his search for his beloved missing sister continues. As the investigation expands into a city-wide conspiracy with sinister intentions, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question –– how far will he go to do what’s right?

I can practically hear slow, mournful horns reminiscent of the late Jerry Goldsmith’s finest scores. Not to mention, the first look photos for Sugar Season 2 only prove that Colin Farrell in a well-tailored suit makes the man look as timeless as ever. (Personally, I blame/thank Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report for this.)

Colin Farrell sits on a bench chatting with a low key Shea Whigham in Sugar Season 2.

Sugar Season 2’s Impressive Guest Cast Roster Boasts Shea Whigham, And Others

Now here’s where the newbies and experienced fans will differ. The latter are probably spinning some ideas on where those wilder elements of the first season will tie into this next chapter.

Frankly, the ability to do that is pretty refreshing; though I’d presume that the first trailer for Season 2 will need to go a bit harder in selling the goods. For now though, there’s one more twist of excitement – via this information on Sugar’s upcoming guests:

In addition to Farrell, the second season of “Sugar” introduces a brand new cast, including Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Laura Donnelly, Sasha Calle and special guest star Shea Whigham.

Colin Farrell and Shea Whigham mixing it up on TV is practically the sort of heat the medium was invented to carry. Even newcomers to this particular program (or any aficionados of Boardwalk Empire) can see that. Keep that in mind as we make our way to Sugar Season 2, which premieres on Apple TV on June 19th.
