Wonder Man released earlier this year on Disney+, showcased a new storytelling style for the Marvel TV brand. The show is getting a rare second season renewal from Disney+ and Marvel. The only other show that’s gotten a second season in this new Disney+ era of Marvel has been Daredevil: Born Again. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley will reprise their roles as Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery.

The team behind the series are also returning. Destin Daniel Cretton, the flimmaker behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day and co-creator Andrew Guest are back on board. Cretton is returning as director and executive producer and Guest is returning as showrunner and executive producer.

Wonder Man was a special series because while it was about the titular Marvel character, it was more so a story about artists and how they find their way in their craft. Simon Williams does have superpowers, but those powers didn’t define the story of Wonder Man. The first season ended on a more open story if it was going to be one and done. It was essentially a buddy comedy set in the world of Hollywood. It is one of the highest-rated Marvel shows/movies from both critics and fans alike on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here’s what we had to say about the series in our 88% review.

The thing that really makes Wonder Man stand out from the rest of the Marvel TV shows, though, is that it doesn’t feel like those other shows. There are references, yes, but for the most part, this is a self-contained story. This is all about the characters. It’s not about furthering some narrative to the build to Avengers: Doomsday or building up Simon Williams to be a member of some team. It’s a character study of these two actors and how outside forces like family, work, and other factors affect them.

At the end of the day, that’s why this show works so well and why we as an audience resonate with these characters. They might be superpowered, but they all face the same things we do.
