It was only a couple of weeks ago that it was announced that KPop Demon Hunters 2 was on the way and heading to Netflix in 2029. Now, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Animation Bosses Kristine Benson and Damien de Froberville have put the brakes on that release date. They stated in the interivew:
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, they argue that KPop Demon Hunters needed to go to Netflix, indicate that a sequel won’t be ready for 2029
KPop Demon Hunters is a fantasy adventure about a fictional K-pop girl group who protect the world from demons with their music, was developed and produced by Sony Pictures Animation. As part of Sony’s licensing deal with Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters launched directly on Netflix and became their most popular movie of all time. Meanwhile, three of its original songs — “Golden,” “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop” — have topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
The sing-a-long version of KPop Demon Hunters earned $18 million at the box office over two days and then earned around $6 million at the Halloween weekend box office.
The film was co-directed by Maggie Kang alongside Chris Applehans. The interview also confirmed that they’d be back in the director’s chair for the sequel.
