Shout! Factory put out excellent 4K restorations of the action classics Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow, and The Killer from John Woo earlier this year. Now, they’re taking those films out on tour to theaters early next year. Shout! Factory and GKIDS are putting the series out in theaters starting on January 25th, 26th, and 28th for Hard Boiled. A Better Tomorrow hits theaters on March 1st, 2nd, and 4th and The Killer finishes things up on April 5th, 6th, and 8th.
These three films stick out as absolute smash classics of the genre. There’s a reason why Shout! Factory put the work in to get these films looking as amazing as possible 4K UHD. All three of the films star Chow Yun-Fat have influenced movies to this day. Hard Boiled is easily the most “ripped off” action movie of the past 40 years.
Shout! Studios, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Film Archives, has been working diligently to restore and remaster these films, all scanned in stunning 4K from the original camera negatives. The video and audio have been restored, and the subtitles have been newly translated from the original Cantonese. In 2025, in collaboration with GKIDS, Shout! Studios and Hong Kong Cinema Classics organized a highly successful series of retrospective bring-backs of numerous titles. This nationwide retrospective expands their partnership on a national scale.
This is the widest North American release that these movies have ever had. They’ll be playing on over 800 screens across the United States in all major markets. They’ll also have a pre-recorded Q&A with John Woo after the films.
