It’s hard to believe, but it has been twenty-four years since arguably one of the worst blunders in television series history. After airing episodes out of order, then wondering why fans were confused or seemed disinterested, the geniuses (< sarcasm) at Fox pulled Firefly from the air without even airing its full season run. We all know what happened next. Following the show properly airing in order in cable syndication, the series gained global cult-classic status. It became so popular that fan action effectively forced the studio to release a wrap-up, feature length, film, Serenity, in 2005. Diehard fans have been hoping for a series resurrection ever since. Recently, show star Nathan Fillion has stirred that hope once again.
In case you haven’t been following, Fillion (Captain Malcolm Reynolds) has a podcast (Once We Were Spacemen) with friend and fellow Firefly cast mate Alan Tudyk (Wash Hoburn). In connection with the podcast, Filion has been posting doorstep videos with each of the other main cast members declaring, “it’s time.” (You can view the videos on the podcast’s official Instagram account HERE.) This has, of course, once again stirred speculation of the show’s revival, though they have been coy about the true nature of what they have planned. However, we do know that illion at least will be at an upcoming convention at which he’ll be making an announcement on March 15.
Are we finally getting a Firefly revival?
Nathan Fillion himself has shot down theories of a con panel or full cast appearance on the podcast. So what, exactly, does he have planned? Whatever it is, the Firefly cast is ready, and willing. Jewel Staite (Kaylee) dropped a “shiny” in her video. Summer Glau (River) declared “I knew it would” when Fillion said the time had come. Adam Baldwin went full Jayne by wearing “the hat,” jacket, and eating an apple at the tip of his knife. But of course Fillion couldn’t “do it without” Alan Tudyk, the last cast member to appear in a video. But what is “it” that’s happening?

Of course fans are hoping, praying ,and lighting candles for a full-on, live-action Firefly return. As much as we throw those vibes out into the ‘verse, the likelihood of that is pretty slim. Fillion is currently still filming in The Rookie, Morena Baccarin has her own show in Sheriff County, and Staite currently stars in the acclaimed Canadian show Family Law. Tudyk’s involvement also seems to quash the live-action theory…. Wash, as we know, sadly perished in Serenity.
So what is it, then? A Funko Pop release? Radio drama to which they are all lending their voices? A Firefly animated series filling in gaps in the original story? Or could it be a live-action renewal with Tudyk’s Wash appearing in flashbacks? We have three more days to wait. Hopefully Fillion hasn’t been setting us up for disappointment. If he has, I swear by my pretty floral bonnet….
