There’s no Asgard without Odin, right? Well the Prime Video and Sony series God Of War has found its Odin in Mandy Patinkin.
Odin is the be-all, end-all when it comes to Norse gods and that requires a certain type of performer. Odin, the All-Father, is not physically imposing or particularly god-like: but looks can be deceiving. He is the most powerful Aesir god, a patriarch who leads with an iron fist, and an unrivaled seeker of knowledge. When it comes to seeking out prophecy, Odin is paranoid, manipulative, and dangerous— he will do anything to try and prevent Ragnarök, the Norse end of days. He serves as a formidable antagonist to Kratos.
Patinkin joins Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, and Ryan Hurst as Kratos, in the series so far. Based on PlayStation’s massively popular ancient mythology-themed video game, the series has received a two-season order, with pre-production underway in Vancouver, and casting has begun.
God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. God of War is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
Mandy Patinkin needs no introduction, he’s one of the finest actors we have today, with roles like Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride, Saul Berenson from Homeland, and plenty of others throughout his long career.
