Sigourney Weaver might have a major role in the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash later this month, but that’s not stopping her from jumping on to other projects. Deadline is reporting that Weaver is close to signing on to a role in the upcoming Tomb Raider series from Prime Video. Sophie Turner is set to star as Lara Croft with Phoebe Waller-Bridge on board as writer and executive producer. At this time, it’s unknown what role Sigourney Weaver would play.

Chris Hodge is also on board as an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge and Jonathan Van Tulleken, who is directing as well. The series has a start of production on January 19th, 2026.

The series, from Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM, is also executive produced by Crystal Dynamics; Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Productions; Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson through Story Kitchen; Michael Scheel; Hodge; and Legendary Television.

That’s not the only high profile franchise that Sigourney Weaver is in though, she’s also appearing in next year’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu. She also has Dust Bunny from Bryan Fuller that opens this weekend in theaters.

Details On The Tomb Raider Series

“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge said. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”

Here’s what Sophie Turner had to say about the role:

“I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”

Sophie Turner is an Emmy nominee for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones. She was a massive fan-favorite character during the run of that show. She currently stars in the British crime drama Joan and is starring in the upcoming show Haven, for Prime Video. This would be a major step for her career post-Game of Thrones.

As for the casting, she’s shown what she can do in regards to action on that show. Any actress stepping into the role would have some pretty big shoes to fill with the popularity of the Tomb Raider series. It started in the 90s and gave the Sony PlayStation one of its marquee characters and mascots. The series was revitalized in the 2010s with Crystal Dynamics trilogy of games.
