Disney+ isn’t moving forward with the pilot for Holes after announcing the series earlier this year. The reimagining of Louis Sachar’s 1998 novel and the 2003 Disney movie were going to be the basis for the series adaptation but with a girl as the lead instead of a boy. Shay Rudolph was set to star in the pilot with Greg Kinnear and Aidy Bryant also starring.
The expectations from both Disney and from fans were sky high. The original film and novel are both massive cultural touchstones for the 2000s generation. Ultimately, Disney decided not to move forward with the project.
The synopsis for the new series would have followed Hayley (Rudolph), a teenage girl sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden (Kinnear) forces the campers to dig holes in the desert for a mysterious purpose.
Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Noah Cottrell, Iesha Daniels, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press starred in the pilot. It was written by Alina Mankin with Liz Phang as the showrunner.
The original film and novel saw Stanley Yelnats, a teenager sent to a juvenile detention camp after he was apprehended for a crime he didn’t commit. At the camp, the Warden had inmates digging holes all day long in search of treasure. The cast included Shia LeBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Khleo Thomas, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson, Patricia Arquette, Dulé Hill and Eartha Kitt.
There’s no reason given as to why they canned the pilot and series order.
