Subnautica 2 is still one of the most hotly anticipated games in video game history right now. All in spite of an ongoing legal battle between the founders of developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment and their publisher Krafton stemming from Krafton’s decision to suddenly and illegally fire those founders back in July 2025. However, that will hopefully not detract from its ongoing development, which fortunately, still seems to be going strong. All you need to do is look at the multiplayer dev vlog from a month ago as evidence of that. And now, we have more evidence of UWE’s still-ongoing work.

Unknown Worlds Entertainment is proud to present a new dev vlog about Subnautica 2 with a focus on base construction. And trust me, it’s a very deep dive into the intricacies of their new construction system. You can see for yourself either on YouTube, or just look below:

Subnautica 2 Diving Deep into Base Building, But Still No Release Date

This is why complexity also equals more freedom to build. Now we just have to actually play it for ourselves.

I have to admit: this entire Subnautica 2 dev vlog was a treat to watch. Unknown Worlds aren’t expanding on their previous building system. It’s almost an entirely new base building system that just retains the Subnautica aesthetic.

The way it seems to work is that you put down a generically shaped room, and then you can freely sculpt that room as you wish by adding little bits to it, or carving them out as you please. You can even freely add windows (also sculptable), decorative pieces, lighting, doors, and even moonpools to the room at will, allowing you to build rooms of virtually any shape and configuration. Even the growbeds for growing plants appear to be fully sculptable. with the apparent ability to put growbeds on top of growbeds visible in one bit of the dev vlog.

It’ll give Subnautica 2 players Lego or Minecraft levels of freedom in designing bases. It’ll also give the devs the freedom to add new base pieces as they make them, like the “fully round rooms” mentioned in the dev vlog, on top of other things like a future addition to the game that will allow players to freely color their bases. All in all, it sounds like the game has a very bright future ahead of it.

Sadly, the one bit of bad news about this dev vlog is the lack of any new info about the release date. The end of the dev vlog still insists that Subnautica 2 has a release window of 2026, and that’s it. It’s already March, so the fact that they don’t even have a specific release date set yet is a bit…suspicious, especially given how long the game has been in development. Unfortunately, we can only wait for UWE to give us that info at a later date.

What do you all think? Does this new Subnautica 2 dev vlog make you imagine what kind of bases you can make when you can play it? Tell us your constructive thoughts in the comment section below.
