There’s always a feeling when it’s still summertime out. It’s hot, it’s dry, there’s really no hope on the horizon. But at a certain point, that summer heat meets its match with the autumn wind. Even here in Southern California, once you feel it, you know exactly what is coming on the horizon. The return of Pumpkin Spice Lattes and other horrifying pumpkin concoctions means only one thing: Fright-A-Thon is back.
What exactly is Fright-A-Thon? If you haven’t seen any content from it for the past 5 years, here’s a distillation of what it means.
Christmas and those holidays get to swallow up the majority of December, November, and part of January. Why not Halloween? September is a month of going back-to-school and residual heat from the summer. Now it’s another month of pumpkins, serial killers, ghosts, ghouls, specters, goblins, and things that go bump in the night.
I know for myself that things change between August 31st and September 1st. The barrier to the world of the wicked, haunting, scary, spooky, and everything orange gets weaker. Those blinding lights of summer fade away for Labor Day and the harvest is near. Shadows start to lengthen, the specters come out to play, the fear of the dark erupts once more from the back of your neck to your brain. Things once thought long gone start appearing in those shadows. The goblins, ghouls, ghosts, monsters, specters, zombies, serial killers, clowns, and anything else that goes bump in the night gain power.
So What Does This Mean? What Can You Expect Out Of Fright-A-Thon In 2025?
It means that every work day between September 1st and October 31st (and sometimes into the beginning of November, who knows), I’ll be writing an article about any Halloween topic or news of the day. You can check out the full index of Fright-A-Thon, all the way back to 2020. It ranges from Halloween decorations, theme park attractions, haunt openings, movie reviews, lists, opinion pieces, guides, and more. It is definitely harder and harder to find topics as the years go by, but that’s part of the fun, giving everyone an article a day.
The fun always kicks off with the Halloween movie marathon, this time going from September 1st all the way to October 31st again. It’ll feature new movies, old movies, weird movies, double features, triple features, and whatever else I can cook up.
