It’s curtains on Rian Johnson’s mystery series Poker Face… or is it? (Dun dun dun!)
Deadline revealed today that streamer Peacock opted not to renew the show for a third season. However, series creator Johnson apparently wants to find a way to keep the mysteries flowing. He reportedly began shopping the series to other broadcasters, in hopes that Poker Face can continue on another network or streamer.
But like any good mystery, this story has a twist. In this case? It’s a new lead. While the first two seasons of Poker Face were helmed by Natasha Lyonne, future episodes would star Peter Dinklage.
According to Deadline, Dinklage would not play a new character, but instead take over as Lyonne’s Charlie Cale.
“We’ve been germinating this next move together since writing the season two finale,” Johnson and Lyonne shared in a statement. “We love our Poker Face and this is the perfect way to keep it rolling. Give us a beat and we may just see Charlie Cale again down that open highway.”
Could Poker Face’s Charlie Cale Go The James Bond Route?
Johnson apparently hopes that a continuation of Poker Face could see the lead actor swapped out every two seasons while taking up the Charlie Cale mantle. While rare, other popular TV and film properties have found success with a similar approach, such as Doctor Who and the James Bond franchise.
The first two seasons of Poker Face followed Cale, who ends up on the run from a casino boss, as she travels across the country and uses her ability to clock any lie to help solve murders. The show employs a Columbo-like structure, where the audience knows the killer before Cale susses them out.
Should Johnson successfully shop the series to a new platform, he and Lyonne will both remain attached as executive producers.
So, what do you think about Poker Face potentially continuing with Dinklage as the new lead? Let us know in the comments below.
