Tokusatsu (特撮とくさつ; lit. ’special filming’) is a fascinating genre. Broadly, it refers to an entire genre of live-action superhero movies and shows that makes extensive use of practical special effects. You can lump in franchises like Super Sentai (known more popularly in the U.S. as Power Rangers), Godzilla, and Kamen Rider into this genre. Toei Company is one of the biggest sources of tokusatsu, including two of the three aforementioned franchises. And now, we’re about to get one more from them.

Toei Company is proud to announce its upcoming new tokusatsu series, PROJECT R.E.D., short for Records of Extraordinary Dimensions. This will be a brand new series that Toei hopes to form the basis of a new franchise, complete with crossovers within that series. The first of which will be “SUPER SPACE SHERIFF GAVAN INFINITY”, which will be a “reimagining” of Space Sheriff Gavan, which aired from 1982-1983. This series, like all others in PROJECT R.E.D., will feature a “red hero in action”, but that’s as far as we’re getting now. There’s nothing else from Toei at the moment, not even release windows, so we’ll just have to wait for them to give us that info at a later date, mostly on their Twitter account.

Well, they do have one thing. That would be a new Japanese teaser art for SUPER SPACE SHERIFF GAVAN INFINITY, which is also the teaser art for PROJECT R.E.D. as a whole. You can check it out below:

Well, that’s a lot of red.

Honestly, there’s not much to work on with this upcoming PROJECT R.E.D. All we really have to go on is that Space Sheriff Gavan reboot that will serve as the first of that franchise. That one is a very little-known tokusatsu series here in NA. In fact, it only received a Blu-ray release in 2022, with footage from it appearing in Power Rangers Beast Morphers. It’s basically a Power Rangers series, but made as a Space Western story starring the titular Gavan (played by Kenji Ohba). If you’re a fan of Power Rangers and Westerns, then you might want to give that a try.

What do you all think? Are you a Power Rangers fan who has had their interest piqued by PROJECT R.E.D.? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
