Superman was one of the biggest and brightest movies of 2025. It’s release saw multiple stars coming out of the film, including Maria Gabriela de Faria, who played The Engineer. She sat down with our friend Brandon Davis on an episode of his podcast The Brandon Davis Show. She talked about all things Superman, filming, her role with DC going forward, and surprisingly, enduring hypothermia on the set of The Fortress of Solitude.

Here’s what she had to say about how cold it was on set.

“[James Gunn] was worried. Yeah, he was worried for me. He has like, the biggest heart and he was very like, ‘Okay, you have like, zero percent body fat.’ Because of the movie, I got, like, really fit. The body fat was non-existent and my suit was so tight that it didn’t allow for any layers underneath. I had to be there, no hair my head, completely exposed. And everybody else was really f***ing covered! Nicholas [Hoult] and Sara [Sampaio] had a whole snow suit, and David [Corenswet] was in his Ultraman suit that allowed for multiple pieces of layer… And I was there dying! It was horrible!

“They told they gave us classes on how to survive Svalbard because it was that cold. So, the first night when we landed, we had to go straight to the lobby of the hotel and take this kind of lesson on how to make sure, you don’t die. One of the things is that when you get hypothermia, you don’t know it. You’re good, you’re good, you’re good, and then one second to the next, you’re fucking dying and the first thing to go is your mind. You get a little crazy and that happened to me. I was not in a good place.

She even went on to talk about how David Corenswet clocked in with her, proving he’s basically a real-life Superman.

“David is Superman. He’s such a great leader and he clocked in and he was like, ‘You need to go back to the pod. You need to go back to the pod.’ And I kept going back to the pod but once you lose the heat from your body, to recover it, it takes hours. It takes a lot of things. The doctor that was with us on location, she took off all of her clothes and took all of my clothes and we had to hug because that’s the only thing, like, body to body.”

Finally, the conversation about hypothermia reached a pretty scary point, if you don’t know about the condition, at a certain point, your mind starts “going”. Maria actually felt this at some point when talking to a producer.

“I remember I was, like, cracking jokes with Lars, our producer, and then all of a sudden I was like, I was not very sure what’s happening. Like, why do I feel this way? And then I would feel really, really bad and then my mind would tell me like, ‘No, you’re good, you’re good! Like, just I lost it in a very particular way that made me not be able to ask for help at the same time.”

“It was terrible but the best experience of my life, at the same time!”

Hypothermia is not something to mess with! Luckily for Maria and her costars and crew, they got everything done without anyone getting hurt.

About Superman And The Upcoming Sequel Man Of Tomorrow

Maria Gabriela de Faria is making her return as The Engineer in Superman: Man Of Tomorrow alongside David Corenswet in the dual role of Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.  The film also stars Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Neva Howell. They’ve also announced that Lars Eidinger is playing the film’s villain, Brainiac. The film reportedly sees the Man of Steel and Luthor forced into an uneasy alliance against the cosmic-level threat. Brainiac immediately raises the stakes beyond anything DC has attempted theatrically to date.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow is set for release on July 9th, 2027.
