Kathleen Kennedy, the woman behind much of what we know as modern Lucasfilm, is stepping down after 14 years at the helm of the company. She will be replaced by Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. They will both lead the company behind Indiana Jones and Star Wars. Filoni comes from the filmmaking background while Lynwen Brennan is more of a business-side person. That signals that Disney and Lucasfilm want a team focuses on both aspects of the business.

Filoni has been named President and Chief Creative Officer, while Brennan has been named co-President. Kennedy will continue to have a relationship with the company and will serve as producer on the company’s next two theatrical films: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter.

That doesn’t mean that Kennedy is stopping what she does best though, she’ll continue to look for other independent producing projects.

Kennedy ends a 14-year run at Lucasfilm during the time of biggest turmoil for the company. She helped push the sequel trilogy starting in 2015 with The Force Awakens, and the Disney+ era of Star Wars TV, but there have been misfires including plenty of unrealized Star Wars projects and the box office disappointment of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

There have been plenty of filmmakers who’ve had Star Wars projects announced and then dropped at a later date like Patty Jenkins, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Taika Waititi, and others. There has been a seven-year gap in Star Wars movies, which is quite frankly a failure on the company’s part.

Filoni and Brennan have their work cut out for them in a theatrical landscape that might not be as healthy or happy to see a Star Wars film as they once were.
