On June 6, 1944, Allied forces led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower stormed the beaches of Normandy, and secured “nothing short of total victory.” We’ve seen that pivotal battle chronicled on film before, with the actual difficulties in planning finding cinematic life in recent years. The upcoming motion picture Pressure looks to focus on that very subject, as Brendan Fraser and Andrew Scott struggle with the very human calculus that helped determine the course of World War II.

In the tense 72 hours before D-Day, and with the fate of the free world hanging in the balance, Pressure follows General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Captain James Stagg as they face an impossible choice—launch the largest and most dangerous seaborne invasion in history or risk losing the war altogether.

Focusing on the 72 hours that ultimately saw this massive military operation’s execution is a novel move. Instead of the traditionally sweeping approach (like The Longest Day), or a personal story that connects tangentially to the battle (such as Saving Private Ryan), Pressure hones in on the human process that took place behind the scenes.
In that sense, this picture seems to be a worthy companion to 2021’s Operation Mincemeat. We’ll have to wait and see, as Pressure is set for theatrical release on May 29th.
