Daemons of the Shadow Realm introduces our main character Yuru to the outside world in Ep. 2 “Right and Left”. In fact, this introduction is one of the most creative examples of reverse isekai I’ve seen in recent anime series. After all, it’s not often when you have the equivalent of what’s basically a member of an uncontacted tribe encounter the modern world for the first time. All amidst quite a bit of bloodshed to boot.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 2 “Right and Left”: Details in Brief

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 2 “Right and Left” is the second episode (you can read my review for Ep. 1 here) dark fantasy action adventure anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Hiromu Arakawa (Fullmetal Alchemist, Silver Spoon, The Heroic Legend of Arslan).
Bones Film (Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Ouran High School Host Club, My Hero Academia) is the animation studio behind this anime. Masahiro Andō is the director behind this anime, with Noboru Takagi as the writer, and Kenichiro Suehiro as the composer for the music.
Speaking of that music, the opening theme song for Daemons of the Shadow Realm is “Time to Fly” by Vaundy. Meanwhile, “Let’s Fly” by yama is the ending theme song.
Synopsis
Alas, Daemons of the Shadow Realm is an ongoing anime series. In fact, Ep. 2 “Right and Left” only just made its debut on April 11, 2026 exclusively on Crunchyroll. Thus, in order to avoid spoilers for those who haven’t watched this episode yet, here’s the official synopsis of this episode from Crunchyroll below:
“Guided by Dera, Yuru flees from his pursuers and awakens the guardian deities of the village.”
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 2 “Right and Left”: The Good

Honestly, well-done isekai stories are some of my favorite stories, and made more precious by how rare they are. Most isekai stories just end up being naked power fantasies aimed straight at a straight male target audience. So it’s incredibly refreshing to find an isekai story that isn’t this, and Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 2 “Right and Left” is a prime example of that.
Or rather, it’s a prime example of a reverse isekai story, since the main character Yuru (voiced by Kensho Ono (JP) and Ben Stegmair (EN)) steps out of a medieval Japanese village in the mountains right into modern Japan. The closest comparison here is like an uncontacted tribesperson meeting a modern city for the first time. He’s simultaneously fascinated, confused, and disturbed by things like cars, which are completely alien to him even as a basic concept. It takes some strange and convoluted analogies just to get Yuru to understand a car, and it results in a fascinating story of this character finding things familiar to us to be alien concepts. I can only imagine his reaction at things like smartphones, which will almost certainly happen in the next episode.
It’s not just the reverse isekai aspects of the story that is good though. The action and violence in this episode are quite spectacular. For all the simplicity of the action itself, it makes great economical use of them to show off the drama and tension. It even dips into horror, switching to the perspective of one of the antagonists in order to show the terror of having your defenses forced open like a clam being slowly eaten by a sea star. The violence, while simple as well, is also extremely brutal, with that same antagonist being impaled by multiple arrows and reacting quite appropriately with screams of pain. It’s the kind of brutal violence you’d expect in a war film, and the kind that Hiromu Arakawa excels in from her experience writing war stories in Fullmetal Alchemist and The Heroic Legend of Arslan.
On top of all of that is the gorgeous animation from Bones Film. The little sprays of blood and the blood soaking into clothing really show the animation team’s skills in animating violence. There’s even little animations of the car hub caps appearing to rotate backwards due to the speed of the rotating tires that I like. It’s little touches like that that make it all feel more realistic.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 2 “Right and Left”: The Bad

That said, the action in Ep. 2 “Right and Left” isn’t particularly fancy. It’s all simple movements made important through effects and narrative weight. It’s not the complex action sequences you’d get in the previous episode. Alas, we can’t have that all the time in every part of the story. Things needs to cool down, after all.
