Though I Am an Inept Villainess is an upcoming tale of courtly intrigue in anime form. All adapted from the light novel of the same name by Satsuki Nakamura, and featuring Doga Kobo (My Senpai Is Annoying, Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, Oshi no Ko) as the animation studio behind it. It’s a story of five families vying for power among themselves, and even more specifically: it’s a story about two women on opposing sides who suddenly experience a magical body swap. A princess and the pauper story here, it seems, but the pauper is a fellow princess. Interested? Well, we will soon see what sort of courtly shenanigans they will get up to pretty soon.
Toho Global is proud to announce that the upcoming anime adaptation of Though I Am an Inept Villainess will soon make its streaming debut. That debut date will be sometime in July 2026, with the anime scheduled to make that debut exclusively on Crunchyroll. As part of this announcement, Toho has the first PV trailer ready for us today, as well as a reveal of the Japanese voice cast. Honestly, this style of story should be familiar to fans of similar stories like The Apothecary Diaries. After all, political intrigue in a private palace among multiple suitors to a royal figure in a vaguely ancient Chinese setting is a pretty specific story idea, but it is a decently large genre. The only difference here is that instead of an outsider looking into the intrigue, the main characters are all part of that intrigue. And judging from that trailer, Though I Am an Inept Villainess is looking like it will be a very intriguing story indeed.
